Who exactly is Alison Botha?
Alison Botha was a 27-year-old insurance broker when she was kidnapped, raped and seriously injured. Botha was abandoned on the outskirts of the city by her attackers. She but she regained consciousness and reached the next road, where she was rescued by a passing vet. For rape, kidnapping and attempted murder, the criminals were identified and sentenced to life imprisonment. Botha later became a motivational speaker. She also received the 1995 Paul Harris Rotary Award for ‘Courage Beyond the Norm’, ‘Woman of Courage’ from Femina magazine, and Port Elizabeth’s ‘Citizen of the Year’. Alison, a documentary film based on her debut book, was released in 2016.
Alison Botha was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on September 22, 1967. After her parents separated when she was ten, she was raised by her mother and 18-month-old older brother Neale. She attended Collegiate High School for Girls in Port Elizabeth, where she graduated as one of the best girls in 1985. She then traveled for several years and worked as an insurance broker.
Kidnapping, rape and attempted murder
Botha was returning home from dropping off a co-worker at 1 a.m. one day in December 1994. He couldn’t find a parking space in his usual lot, so he went to another parking lot a short distance from his house. An unknown guy threatened her with a knife as she tried to get out of her vehicle. He urged her to follow him and hand over the keys to the vehicle.
The guy told her that if she obeyed his order and only needed the car for a short time, he wouldn’t hurt her. He led Botha to the lonely outskirts of the city, where she picked up another individual. They raped and strangled her to knock her out after stopping at a place where no one would find them. They proceeded to stab her many times in her belly, disemboweling her and finally severing her neck. When she regained consciousness, she had no idea what had happened to her. “All I could see was an arm moving over my face,” she said, paraphrasing. Then she remembered the terrible scene without pain, making it seem like a dream.
“I was out of the car, now on the sand and the broken glass,” he said, “and all I could see was an arm moving over my face.” Left and right, left and right, left and right. Her movements created a sound. It was a wet sound, the sound of my skin being cut. He was using the knife to cut my throat. “And again.”
“It seemed surreal, but it wasn’t.” I didn’t feel any pain, but it wasn’t a dream. This was happening. “The man was slitting my throat,” Botha said, “and I was fully aware of the fear and horror that ran through every nerve in my body.” I turned to face the boy as he left and heard his words fade further from me. There was a strange scratchy sound.”
It wasn’t until later that Botha realized the harsh sound was coming from his own throat. He tried to prevent her body from making that sound because he was afraid they would hear her alive if she spoke too loudly.
How do i do it?
After slitting her throat 15 times, the two boys were sure that she was dead and that no one in that state could live. She heard the boys talking, so she pretended to be dead until they got away from her. Botha, on the other hand, was only 27 years old. She wanted to achieve more in life and did not want to die. “In that moment, I knew I had to at least leave a clue as to who did this to me, so I wrote their names in the sand and ‘I love mom’ underneath,” she said on her deathbed. There was so much more that she wanted to achieve, so much more that she wanted to live for.”
First, Botha used her blood to write the boys’ names on the stone she lay on and prepared to rise to her feet. She discovered her internal organs on the surface of her body as she moved. Nonetheless, Botha chose to come forward.
“It was time to get going. I dragged myself over the mud and broken glass, one hand clutching at my clothes. I grew progressively fatigued with each subsequent movement. “At some point, I collapsed on the sand, exhausted,”
Botha said, “and as I struggled forward, my sight faded and I fell many times, but managed to get back up until I finally hit the road.”
Gathering her clothes beside her, she covered her abdomen with one hand, straightened her head with the other, and headed for the nearest road in the hope that someone would spot her.
“I pulled my head forward with my free hand and my vision returned, at least temporarily,” he said while. As he went, my vision went back and forth, and I fell many times, but managed to get back up until I hit the road.”
Botha wanted to give up and die numerous times due to the intensity of the exertion and stress. Every time he tried to do it, he was reminded of his mother. “But then I remembered my mother and I knew I had to move on.” So I got up and crawled some more, but it was taking too long. “I knew then that I had to get back on my feet,” he reflected.
Who saved her?
Tiaan Eilerd, a veterinary student from Johannesburg who was on vacation, saw her lying on the road. He kept her until medical help arrived from her after seeing her alive and conscious of her. When the medical team and Eilerd arrived at the hospital, the doctors were amazed as they had never seen such damage on a single person who was still alive. Botha was discovered with 36 knife wounds to the belly, 17 cuts to the neck and multiple sexual assaults. However, he survived, as none of the injuries had reached his arteries and his windpipe was still intact, allowing him to breathe sufficiently.
After the operations, Botha identified the criminals. They were found to be satanists named Theuns Kruger and Frans du Toit. They supposedly performed a ceremony as a sacrifice to Satan. The details of his crimes and his survival shocked the entire country, and his trial was dubbed the Noordhoek Ripper Trial. Despite this, the defendant pleaded guilty to all charges, including kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder. In August 1995, they were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
